Prep2Shelter presented to the Grindavík community in Iceland

On 16 June 2026, Sólveig from the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC) at the University of Iceland presented the Prep2Shelter project during the General Meeting of Járngerður, a community association established by residents of Grindavík following the volcanic eruptions.

Járngerður was created to ensure that the local community has an active voice and a seat at the recovery planning table. The meeting provided an opportunity to introduce Prep2Shelter’s objectives and planned interviews, emphasising the importance of incorporating community perspectives into disaster shelter planning.

The presentation focused on how engagement with local communities can support the development of more effective and inclusive preparedness strategies. The project was well received by participants, and the exchange with the Grindavík community represented an important step in strengthening collaboration with local stakeholders.
