The 1st Prep2Shelter workshop is approaching!

It will take place on 5 October, bringing together the project team and DRM stakeholders for knowledge exchange and to advance the project’s work. The workshop will be followed by a fieldwork mission to Thessaly, focusing on the local disaster sheltering responses.

About the workshop

The two programmed Prep2Shelter Workshops are key moments for multi-stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange on disaster sheltering processes.

This 1st workshop will bring together project researchers and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) practitioners from the consortium countries, including civil protection officials, local government professionals, and other stakeholders involved in DRM. This is an important step towards building the Prep2Shelter DRM network, strengthening connections among researchers and DRM practitioners from several countries.

Objectives

The workshop will provide an opportunity to:

  • Share knowledge and experiences

    on disaster sheltering, emergency preparedness, and post-disaster recovery;

  • Strengthen and consolidate the Prep2Shelter DRM network

    by fostering dialogue among researchers, civil protection officials, local authorities, and DRM practitioners

  • Identify core objectives and requirements

    for multicriteria methodology and IT tool to support disaster shelter planning.

Key Program features:

3 Keynotes

  • Invited speakers from Türkiye with expertise on earthquake risk and disaster risk reduction, sheltering and post-disaster recovery will share their perspective on recent post-disaster recovery processes iand lessons learned in Türkiye;

1 Meeting

Greek Civil Protection Officials will share their experience and lessons learned from the Elassona earthquake (March 2021) and Storm Daniel (September 2023), with focus on implications for disaster preparedness and shelter planning;

Fieldwork mission to Central Greece

The fieldwork mission to Thessaly, Central Greece, will have place from 6 to 8 October.

Thessaly, Central Greece is one of the three pilot areas of Prep2Shelter. Past disaster experiences in the region are being analysed to generate insights for improving future disaster shelter planning. Having experienced a sequence of disasters, Thessaly provides an important setting to analyse how communities navigate successive crises. The fieldwork seeks to capture the experiences and perspectives of local decision-makers, civil protection officials, and affected families, with particular attention to the challenges posed to disaster management and the provision of temporary shelter.
